When children mispronounce words, ELSA may automatically transcribe what it expects the child to say. This article shows you how to manually capture articulation errors and mistranslations so your analysis accurately reflects the child’s speech.
This process ensures your speech-language pathology expertise is preserved while ELSA accelerates transcription.

Step-by-Step: Capturing Articulation Errors
1. Play the Audio and Edit the Transcript
- Click Play
- Edit directly inside the transcript box as the audio plays
2. Identify Articulation Errors
- ELSA may transcribe the correct word
- Listen closely for how the child actually pronounced it
3. Use Brackets to Note Errors
When a child mispronounces a word: - Keep the system’s transcription - Add the child’s pronunciation in brackets
Example:
This preserves: - Intended word meaning - Actual articulation pattern
4. Continue Reviewing the Transcript
- Pause as needed
- Capture consistent patterns (e.g., substitutions, omissions)
Best Practices
- Examiner (
E) and Child (C) labels are optional - You may remove examiner utterances entirely if preferred
